A Return to Macro…

Day 20813-1

Day 208

Lately I’ve been admiring folks’ Macros pics of bugs, spiders and the like, so today I decided I was going to give it a shot and photograph ladybugs.  Seemed simple enough.  I jumped in the car and headed for a nearby garden store, I picked up a bag of ladybugs (pretty sure there were hundreds in that stinky little satchel) and also figured a nice little plant to perch them on was in order.  I purchased my items and excitedly headed home to capture my favorite little bug…

It’s usually windy in Colorado in the spring so I thought I might start indoors just to get a feel for things.  Upon closer inspection of my new bag of bugs, I would guess there were upwards of 200 busy little bugs dying to get out.  I tried to keep it contained, I tried to keep things under control, but mass chaos ensued and pretty soon I had 50+ ladybugs crawling around our kitchen floor, up the walls, on the ceiling, and not one damn bug was interested in my plant.  Bastards.  Ironically enough I had yanked a dandelion weed on my way in from the store (our neighbors have great yards and we feel pressure to keep ours in order too) and damn if they weren’t obsessed with that weed.

Seeing that things were rapidly spiraling out of control, I hurriedly moved everything outside and freed the remaining bugs.  They were everywhere – in my hair, crawling up my pant legs, I even found one in my pocket.  I’m pretty sure I’ll have some sort of horrific ladybug nightmare tonight and I’m also pretty sure that I don’t want to see another one anytime soon.  Oh, and to my spouse, honey I’m very, very sorry about the bugs that you will no doubt be helping me find and relocate outdoors for at least the next week…

Both pics were taken using my Canon 6D and 100mm Macro lens with a +4 magnifying filter.  The first was taken indoors on a tripod, the second, outdoors freehand.

The mental image of you trying to control several hundred ladybugs armed with only a camera caused me much hilarity at various points throughout the day. Thank you for all your photographs 🙂
