It’s all about composition…

Day22113-1

Day 221

In addition to my blog, I also post my pictures in an online gallery through a company called Viewbug. Viewbug has photography contests, challenges, and provides an open forum for photo enthusiasts, such as myself, to give and receive feedback on their pics. I jumped on this morning and saw that someone had taken the time to comment on a variety of my photos, and not just the usual “nice shot”, “good composition”, etc. They provided me with some really great insight, and they asked me if I had considered “this or that” in regards to specific aspects of my photos. They also pointed out that I tend to shoot a single thing, person, and that I tend to crop in pretty tight on scenes.

I looked back through all of my images, clear back to the very beginning, and sure enough, I do tend to zoom in, crop tight, and highlight a smaller portion of what is usually a much larger scene. As this project is really just me trying to improve, I headed out in search of a scene on a “bigger” scale. I knew I would be near downtown today, and somehow fate brought me to the center of my city, and to the discovery that the beautiful pianos from last fall were out again along the main pedestrian mall inviting anyone to approach, sit down and play. As luck would have it, I found the perfect scene to give my zoomed out approach a whirl…

There are 2 pictures from today, the first, is my attempt at viewing an entire scene, trying my hand at a different style of composition. The second is where I tend to reside usually, a zoomed in, tightly cropped composition, highlighting just a piece of a much bigger scene…

Day2216-1

I can’t decide which one I prefer, but I think I will push myself to continue branching out on my compositions, it certainly can’t hurt…

Great capture. You really were in the perfect place at the perfect time!
I’ve been experimenting with putting my subject off-centre. I would have enjoyed trying that out at your location!
