“As soon as there is life there is danger…” unknown

Day 254

As rational informed adults we probably all know that crime is just a part of living in a large metropolitan area, and maybe we even accept it and expect for it to happen.   Here in Denver, we’ve always had our share of petty crimes, late-night bar brawls, and a variety of vandalism and trespassing infractions, but lately we’ve been seeing a disturbing increase in violent crimes against people.  Even more frightening is that those crimes are increasing in frequency, and occurring in broad daylight.

Over the past several months I’ve posted multiple photos I snapped along Denver’s wildly popular pedestrian mall, the 16th Street Mall. I took them in the mornings, over lunch, in the afternoons, and never did I feel unsafe, threatened or in any sort of peril.  Maybe that’s because I’m familiar with the area, maybe because I don’t look like a tourist (despite the cameras), or maybe because I have a look when I do feel threatened that says “if you mess with me I will take your ass out”.  I don’t know, what I do know is that since April there has been a bevy of assaults, muggings, even a murder on the busy well-traveled Mall.  Last week an urban traveler (weed is legal here, ‘nough said) attacked random people on the Mall beating them with a pipe, it was heinous.

“Best. Hair. Ever.”

I know it seems ridiculous that I would willingly choose to go to the mall today, but our Mayor declared that violence won’t be tolerated on the Mall and that the Denver Police would be on every block of the Mall through the end of the summer.  I had to go see for myself what was happening and I wanted to know if one of my favorite places to photograph folks was feeling the effects of the Mall’s growing violence problem…

Today’s pics were all snapped on the Mall, in the majority of the photos, in the background (this was not intentional, making it even more apparent to me) you can see Denver Police officers and vehicles.  What I found interesting is that while their presence made me feel safer; it also made me more aware of my surroundings, more concerned for my own safety, and even less trusting of my fellow-man…

I saw the video of the guy with the pipe. The Metro area has seen so many changes in the past few years, it’s inevitable that the massive population boom will bring in the bad element. Sadly, I think that many of the law enforcement arena have their hands tied due to political pressure (My own opinion, with very little factual evidence, mind you) and societal image, that there seems to be less proactive involvement to deter such things. Of course with the Cherry Creek Art Festical this past week, there were going to be more people down there anyways.

I used to work near the mall, so I spent a lot of time down there. It was rare that I would see crazy things happen, but they do happen…it just seems to be more frequent now.

I agree the population boom has had an impact in the increase, and I worked down on the mall at one point too, perhaps I’m just older and more interested now…thanks for commenting – it’s always appreciated!
